DISTRICT STATEMENT ON SIERRA HIGH SCHOOL TREES

SIERRA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT – March 27, 2026
Following a thorough evaluation by a certified arborist, Sierra Unified School District has determined that two non-native oak trees located on the Sierra High School campus—including the oak tree near the cafeteria—are in a state of decline due to disease and pose a safety risk.

Based on this professional assessment, the District will move forward with the removal of both trees. While we understand that these trees may hold meaning for members of the Tollhouse community, the safety of our students, staff, and visitors must remain our highest priority.
This decision follows careful review and due diligence, including an independent assessment of the trees’ health and structural integrity. The findings made clear that preservation is not a viable long-term option without compromising safety.

As part of ongoing campus improvements and construction, the District is committed to thoughtful replanting efforts. We will prioritize the introduction of native tree species that are better suited to the local environment and can thrive safely for generations to come.
Sierra Unified remains committed to responsible stewardship of its campuses—balancing safety, environmental considerations, and the long-term needs of our school community.

Our Total # of Students
may be small compared to other districts but we pride ourselves on things like opportunity, academic choice, creative thought, ideas and ingenuity, and caring for others. These are the things we consider big and we create the space for our students to live them out each and every day.
